In recent years, the freight transport industry has followed a steep learning curve in product management driven by the rapid development of internet retailing. Among the challenging aspects of that has been the issue of the increased number of product returns and how they are managed. Indeed, the way in which the logistics industry has responded to this externally-driven learning curve has led to the development of a whole new set of services for the management of returns - thereby reducing freight transport costs and wastage. However, these developments are likely to reap more rewards in ways that have not yet been imagined; for instance, just one feature of the requirements for improved sustainability means that less 'virgin' material should be used in manufacturing and more recycling and reuse of existing materials needs to take place.
The key to unlocking any new market like that will be the IT systems that need to provide all requisite information to the relevant stakeholders in real time, such as to detail the quality of a reuse material, its provenance and how it can be collected from a potentially disparate set of locations for a single end delivery. That’s something a suitably adapted comprehensive SaaS transport management system (TMS) can deliver at the push of a button.
